10. & 11. day in Tartu, Estonia

Hello!
We decided to join yesterdays and todays blog in one post since we didn't do much yesterday.

So yestrday, Sunday, 6. September 2016 we stayed in the whole day. We woke up around 9 and looked outside the window. We realized that it is extremely cold because we also openede our window so we decided to stay in. We did however work on some of the homeworks we've gotten over the past week.

Today, Monday, 7. November 2016 we woke up in the morning, finished all the morning necessities and went to school. The schedule was the same as it was the last monday so we had to finish the live model painting and than the plastic art class.

And this is what happens when we wait for our teacher

In the plactis art class, as I mentioned in last weeks Monday blog post we got homework and it was to think of a few ideas for a good deed award. We did our homework and in class the teacher checked our work, talk us trought it and told us which ideas were good and which bad. He explained to us how to work on them, how to make them better and gave us even a little more confidence with our work in his class.
Some of our sketches

Also with every class we go to, we notice that the work and classes are much more relaxed. Don't get me wrong, personally we are both used to and like our sistem better because it has a bit more disciplne, but here the classes are a bit more relaxed and with less 'strict' rules, which is of course also good for this kind of school but for us, since we're not used to it it is quite new.

When we finished off with the day, Zoe, our friend came to school because she had some classes but also to see us. She surprised us with Estonian chocolates, one for me and one for Nika and honestly we were both so surprised and happy that we have the chance to have this lovely girl as our friend. Each chocolate has a legend behind it, based on the character that's on the chocolate, so interesting! So thank you Zoe again! We tasted one of the chocolates and they taste amaying!
delicious Estonian chocolate from Zoe <3

Tomorrow me, Nika and Zoe are going on a trip to Tallin! We are so excited and ready for the city. Be prepared for a longer post with better and more pictures tomorrow!
Till next time,
Nika, Anastasija.

9. Poglavje - MOJ SNEMALNI DAN (Špela)

Žiiujoo :)
No in po prelepem morskem vikendu in dveh zabavnih večerih je danes bilo treba reees zgodaj na delo. :)

No..

In najbolj zanimiva stvar...

Lep pozdrav in nočko vsem :)

7. in 8. poglavje, RAZISKOVALNI VIKEND

7. poglavje, COMINO JE RES LEP

No ta plan smo prve izvršile jaz, Nika in Špela, saj sta Erik in Luka še malo poležala.

Zjutaj smo se res kasneje zbudili, naredili zajtrk in spet poležavali v postelji.

Pogled z vrha
Ko smo prispeli domov, smo se kar hitro lotili delati večerje. Vsi skupaj smo pripravili piščančje ocvrtke in pečen krompir.
Postala sta prava kuharja

9th day in Tartu, Estonia

Saturday, day 9, 5. November 2016

We woke earlier today since we went to bed early last night. We got up around 8:00 and that really surprised us because for school we almost cry when we hear our alarm clocks at 8:00 and today we woke up on our own. I guess our bodies got used to the time and woke up on it's own thinking we might be late to class. Also there was a bit of sun in the morning but it was still very cold!

We did however stay in bed for some time because we knew we had nothing to do. We did make plans thought and those were to go out after lunch to the city and visit the outside of the Art museum, that's leaning like the Pisa tower (yes you read that correctly!), buy some souvenirs and when the sun goes down go to a shopping mall.

A bit of sunlight!

Before leaving to go on the bus we decided to take the Osmo we borrowed from school and film our walk around Tartu. So as we said we first visited the leaning art house and it honestly looks soo interesting and amazing how  building can spark up a city.

Next stop was the souvenir shop. We both spent some money but bought things for the whole family and even for ourselves! The sun has gone down as we finished with our shopping and we head back to the bus stop where we took another bus and went to a shopping mall a little further away from the city centre. We looked around and made some plans what to buy next week, since we don't want to spent too much money in one day. When we circeled almost the whole mall we also went into Rimi, a grocery shop where we bought some Estonian chocolate for some family members and friends and than head to the bus stop.
Usually I would check the bus app to see when a bus would arrive but it started acting up so we just went to the exit (the bus stop is really close to the exit) and saw the bus; we ran and caught it! Than we arrived home and watched a movie and of course wrote this blog post!
The weather was cloudy with a bit of sunshine in the morning hours, the temperature was -1,4C.

Thank you for reading!

we know how to use Osmo correctly, we promise!

8th day in Tartu, Estonia

Friday, finally! 4. November 206
We started the day at 8 as usual. We got ready a bit quicker since our bus leaves at 8:44. We also made some lunch to go since we would have to be in school from 9:00 to 14:00. We arrived at the school a little before 9 and see what was our work.

We were in the class Basic Art Studies. We had to draw a perspective of a house, corner, stairs or anything else we'd find in the school. We first set up in the hallway and decided to paint a house that was visible from the school window. While drawing the schools cute cat Igor came to visit.

He's soo cute!

We had to stop and pet the kitten!

But the teacher came to see our work, and told us that the particular house we were drawing didn't have 2 points; we than realized we had to draw a 2 point perspective, something the teacher didn't mention before, but that was probably because she forgot or she might have mentioned yesterday when was the first class but we didn't go to that class because we choose digital typography because it was more fun, interesting and mostly usefull for us and our field. We than moved our art stand in another room and started drawing there. We had to draw till 12:15 which was the lunch break and than continue drawing another drawing at 13:00 at a church.

So after the lunch break we walked to the city and the church we were supposed to meet at. We arrived just on time and the teacher explained the students what to do and when she finished our friend Zoe that was in the same class translated the instuctions. Our job was to draw an uppet point of our wiev; I choose a window and Nika choose 3 colums. We also took some wooden boards and 2 papers to do the work. We were in a protestant Church so the interior wasn't too hard to draw but the task was still difficult since the church was soo cold and we had to sit there and draw for 4 hours.

When the clock ticked 16:00 we packed our things and left; we were really happy to go home and even to go on the bus because the church was colder than outside in our opinion! When we arrived home we went to bed quite early than the other days.

The weather was cold, around -2C without snow.
Best wishes,
the 2 Estonian girls!

7th day in Tartu, Estonia

Thursday, day 7, 3. November 2016

Tere,
today started later than usual, which meant we could sleep longer, win for us! Yesterday (Wednesday) we made plans with the same teacher (Deniss), to come to school at 13:00 and be there till 18:00. We'd join the older group of students, over 25 years I think and be a part of the digital typography class; they had just started that class last week so it was perfect! Me and Nika agreed on that timetable for the day, and woke up the next day, today at 10 and slowly got ready for school; made breakfast, lunch to go and tidied up our little apartment.

We arrived at the school, each choose a free computer and first watched what the other did. The students showed the teacher their homework/work they had to finish in the class from last week. They had two tasks to complete, the first one was to make a list of 15 antonyms (words that are opposite from each other; 5 adjectives, 5 adverbs and 5 nouns) and for each choose a font that best describes the literal meaning of the word; our task was when the students finished showing this part of the work, to guess a few words and see if we understood any estonian and if the students did a good job at choosing the fonts or not. At first we were so lost and had no idea what was going on, but eventually we got the hang of it and understood a few words.
The second task was to made 3 different posters, similar to the Keep calm and carry on, but to choose a different font, that didn't fit the meaning behind it at all. It was interesting to see other people's work.

When a few of them showed their work, the teachr explained to us all (first in Estonian, than translated it to English for us) how to make paper 3D glasses. He gave us all material and an outline of the classes and we started making them!

in the making

We had no trouble making them, and a few of the students even helped us, by cutting paper for others and also gave us both one.

Almost done!

When twe finished making them, the teacher put up a picture on the projecter of 4 words we could look at with the classes; when closing one eye you could see one word, when closing the other you could see another word.

Next, all of us (us and the students) had to make our own list of 4 words; 1. was the font type and how we describe it, 2. was a brand and the font type they use, 3. was a font type and a font family and the 4. was two words opposite to each other. How we made them was:

1. we choose 2 different words
2. each word in each of the 4 cathegories had to be the same font type and size
3. we choose a different colour for each word; one was red and the other blue
4. on both words, we reduced the opacity to 60%, put one word over the other and the list was done!

my finished list; I will show it to the teacher next week and see if it's good!

We had to finish this task whilst in class and we both did. Because we had some time left, we could leave early, the teacher was fine with it and a few students left early, but we decided to stay till 18:00 because we aren't used to leaving class early. Since we stayed, the teacher gave us some additional work and also homework. We had to do the work the students did last week; the keep calm task and the list of 15 antonyms.

He explained the story of the Keep Calm and Carry On story
(The story: there were originally 3 posters, 2 found early, the third the one we made was found later in 2002 and it meant that when Great Britain was tooken over by the Germans, the citizens should stay calm and no matter what was happening to just carry on witht their lives)
and our task was to make 3 posters, that looked the same but use a font that didn't fit the meaning. When we had finished that, we had to make the list of 15 antonyms.
We both first started working on the Keep calm posters but because it was nearly 6 we saved our work on the USB key I took with me and finished the work at home. Next week, on Thursday we will show all of our work and get the feedback.

After that, we head back home, made a quick stop at the store to get some milk and cheese, made dinner, talked to our families on skype and went to bed.

The weather was cold as usuall without snow!
Best wishes, Anastasija&Nika

Danes sem podaljšala do 17.30, ker smo morali dokončati delo.

Zjutraj smo vstali bolj pozno zato nismo v miru utegnili pojesti zajtrka.

V Valleti smo se sprehodili čez glavno ulico in kupili spominke in kartice in nato z zadnjim avtobusom v postelje.

6. day in Tartu, Estonia

Hi!
Wednesday, day 6, 2. November 2016
Something bright and white woke us up on this cold Wednesday (besides our alarm clocks) and that was snow! Yes it snowed again, and as I have mentioned before the weather predictions showed us snow, but nevertheless we were still surprised when we saw the  snow on the foortops of houses. I guess we will have to get used to it!
Agin we rushed to the bus this morning, thinking we would miss it, but we arrived at the bus stop on time, and the bus was a few minutes late again.

We arrived at the school about 10 minutes before the lesson started and waited in front of our classroom; we waited and waited and no teacher showed up. We decided to wait at the window that had a place to sit, in front of the floor door that lead into many classroom, including our own. We weren't sure what to do, since all the computers in the classroom were taken and we saw no male teacher enter or sit at the front desk. We waited good few hours, and kept checking if there was someone that could help us.
Our view for a good few hours

Part of the school

Eventually the teacher we were waiting for came and asked us if we were the students from Slovenia. We said yes and he told us to meet him in the classroom 305 after the lunch break that would start in about 10 minutes. Me and Nika of course didn't feel the best just waiting out there but we had nothing else to do and the teacher wasn't mad and I think he understood our situation.

So after the lunch break we sat down with the teacher, introduced ourselves and talked a bit about our stay at the school. We saw what the students were working on; laying out a newspaper article and we explained that we are familiar with this kind of work and that we have done similar projects back at SMGŠ (our school in Slovenia). Because there was not much hours left of the class, he showed us little books that the students have made in previous leassons. They were made from A3 papers with folding and cutting only.
Our classroom for the day

Example of the books made by students

So our work for the day was to make one; me one and Nika one. We did have a bit trouble with it, not going to lie, but the teacher helped us and showed us a much easier way to make the book. Our first thought was to divide the A3 paper into squares, draw out lines and cut them, but than he explained that we just have to fold the paper a few times and cut in assigned places, fold and get the result. After that, we got the hang of it and we both made one; the end result thought was not too good, the fold were not eaven and it didn't look as good as the example ones we got. But before the class ended, the teacher showed us how to make the book cover and told us that if we aren't happy with out work, we could take some material home and make another one, because the first ones nevere end up looking too good. And that's what we did!
And for the content of our book, Nika's will be filled with emojis with English and Slovenian meaning and use, since she's good at drawing and mine will be filled with Slovenia phrases and English translations so the students that want to learn a bit of our language can!
Nika's book in the making
Me and Nika both agree that this class is really interesting and fun, and we can learn a lot from it. Also the teacher explained the subject and our assigment well so that's what made us like this subject even more. We also talked to the teacher and me and Nika decide to go to his class tomorrow aswell, where we will be doing a bit of 3D work or something along those lines; something that we know a bit about, but we will be working more on it tomorrow, so that's exciting and we're ready to learn! Also the class starts at 13:00 and finishes at 18:00 so that's good!

When the class was over we got back home, made dinner later on in the day and enjoyed the evening in our room.

The weather today was cold, -2C, a bit windy and it snowed from time to time.

more snow

We miss our school!
